Description
The hole in our holiness is that we don't seem to care much about holiness. Or, at the very least, we don't understand it. And we all have our reasons too: Maybe the pursuit of holiness seems legalistic. Maybe it feels like one more thing to worry about in your already overwhelming life. Maybe the emphasis on effort in the Christian life appears unspiritual. Or maybe you've been trying really hard to be holy and it's just not working! Whatever the case, the problem is clear: too few Christians look like Christ and too many don’t seem all that concerned about it. This is a book for those of us who are ready to take holiness seriously, ready to be more like Jesus, ready to live in light of the grace that produces godliness. This is a book about God's power to help us grow in personal holiness and to enjoy the process of transformation. - from Amzon

THE HOLE IN OUR HOLINESS BY KEVIN DEYOUNG
Review by Ruth Waliaula

The Hole in Our Holiness is that we don’t care much about it. Deyoung says that holiness has been neglected in most of our churches and that as Christians ourselves we never think of our personal holiness. There I a gap in that when we celebrate about what Christ has saved us from, we don’t give a little thought on what He has saved us to do.
Big question is, if God’s mission in the world is to save the unholy people and to sanctify those He saves, if He justifies the ungodly through faith alone, then why should we struggle with holiness or struggle to be holy? Is it even possible to please God? Can we even attain holiness?
Kevin Deyoung writes this book to address the issue of holiness among Christians. He helps us answer these questions and many others concerning holiness. He helps us understand why holiness is important for God’s people and why we should work on our personal holiness. He helps us understand that holiness is possible and it is not optional, that we have been saved to be holy. He says ‘for those who have been made right with God’s family, many of our righteous deeds are not filthy in God’s eyes, they are exceedingly sweet, pressures and pleasing to Him’.
Deyoung has helped me understand that as Christians we have a part to play in pursuit of holiness, we still have to put in effort; God makes us holy but we must pursue what is God’s gift to us-holiness. And the confidence we have in the battle of pursuing holiness is that Christ won the battle of holiness for us. Therefore, holiness is only possible for those who are in Christ and holiness is being like Christ.
There is a chapter that I liked how he explains the work of Spirit, gospel and faith in my personal holiness; Spirit empowers our pursuit of holiness, gospel drives us towards Christlikeness and Faith fuels our obedience. Therefore our effort towards holiness should be Spirit-powered, gospel-driven and faith-fuelled.
It is possible to be Holy and it is possible with our imperfect righteousness to please our all righteous God.
This book is a must read to all believers.
