BOOK REVIEW: THE WORD AND SPIRIT TOGETHER.
WRITTEN BY: EUGENE OMUKALA
Word and Spirit together is a book that was birthed due to the differences that the church has had among the many groups that believed and stood for the ideas that they thought was worth defending to maintain the canon of scriptures and Christianity at large.
The book focuses on two groups not all of them, it deals with the Evangelicals and the charismatics, David Pawson tries to help us see the importance of working together and laying down our pride and consider facts that the canon of scripture has to offer. The difference has been found not in all the scriptures but on a few details that both do have a contrary idea.
The Charismatic believe in two things, the gift of Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit and His works yet the Evangelicals according to this time frame and some today don’t appreciate this matter( work of the Holy Spirit), the Evangelicals believe that the canon of scripture has to be defended and the gospel proclaimed. The writer helps us to see how the evangelicals have defended the gospels and the reasons why they are doing it and have to do it.
This book helps us appreciate how the church has evolved and the reasons that led to this evolution to take place, it helps us appreciate pre-messianic period, messianic and the post-messianic and how the Spirit of God operated in all those period. It shows us the transformation of the church since the early days of the apostle up to this day, the changes that took place, what brought the changes and why. You will also appreciate why the gospel needs to be defended, but up to what level should the gospel be protected from men that would want to misuse the scriptures.
It also helps us appreciate the relationship between the evangelicals and the charismatic and how they have been able to work together even after hating one another during the early days of their formation. Evangelicals were the first then the charismatic followed, through these waves you would appreciate the effort that has brought these two groups closer to one another.
• The 1st waves being the wave of suspicion (charismatics not being appreciated by the evangelicals)
• The 2nd waves being the wave of tolerance
• The 3rd wave is the wave of a coalition (working together)
• The 4th wave has not happened yet but the writer believes it will be an integration of the two groups.
This book also elaborates on the ideas that it feels both groups need to work on to make integration of these two groups possible, they include:
• Theology where Charismatic need to observe theology more than relying on their experience alone while the Evangelicals need also to learn not to divorce experience from theology.
• Prophecy: Charismatic need to a learn that prophecy is not scripture but have to weigh it along with the scriptures yet Evangelicals needs to learn that apostolic is not abnormal, thus we still have apostles though they don’t have the same responsibilities of writing scripture as of the early days.
• Glossolalia: to the Charismatic, they should understand that tongues are not everything and to the Evangelicals that tongues are not nothing, it is given by the Lord.
There are other points touched on such as worship, holiness, and initiation. All these things are important to note and live in the true light of scripture concerning all matters.
This book has been an eye-opener for me as I have experienced both sides, I have been exposed to both extremes and it is not something to be ignored, we need to help one another to live for Christ and be faithful to His Word accepting all things that it has to offer. Being able to swallow our egos and study the scriptures being ready to experience all that has been written that we can experience in this era.
This book has brought back order to my life, helping me not to judge either side but to strike a balance between the two groups, I would like to pick Good qualities from both sides and live for the glory of Christ. You can also read the book and see if what I am saying is true, if you have experienced one side alone then it will help you know how to handle yourself the moment you experience the other side.
