God’s Big Picture-Tracing The Storyline Of The Bible
By Vaughan Roberts
Book Review by Ruth Waliaula
God’s Big Picture is written in an orderly way that is easy to follow through. The book has 8 chapters that are divided into two, chapter 1-5 is an overview of Old Testament and chapter 6-8 is an overview of the New Testament and at the end of each chapter we have a bible study guide for more understanding of the chapter. The author writes to give us an overview of the whole bible to help us see how different parts fit together.
Vaughan Roberts writes this book with the desire that we may experience these three things:
• Know Christ in all the scriptures
• Teach Christ In all the Scriptures
• Love Christ through All the scriptures
He starts by reminding us that the bible must be understood and read as one book with one ultimate author, God and one ultimate subject, Gods plan of Salvation through His son Jesus. I think without this knowledge, it will be impossible for us to read the scripture and remain faithful it. It will actually lead to misunderstanding of the scripture.
Vaughan helps us understand that the whole bible points to Christ. He helps us in connecting Old Testament and the New Testament. Understanding that the two can’t be read separately, in Old Testament, God promises the coming of Christ in the future and in the New Testament, God proclaims Him as one who fulfils all those promises (OT is the promise and NT is the fulfilment) .Therefore reading the OT without the NT or reading any part without considering the context of the whole bible will lead to misunderstanding of the bible.
The eight chapters of this book are; The Pattern of the kingdom, The perished kingdom, The promised kingdom, The partial Kingdom, The prophesied kingdom, The present kingdom, The proclaimed kingdom and the perfect Kingdom. These chapters have been written clearly that we are able to follow and understand how God’s plan for redemption unfolds from the fall of man to the coming of Jesus. I have been made to understand that we are not yet there but there is hope as we long for the second coming of Jesus (Eternal glory) and this is how the new testament ends, waiting for the final fulfilment of the promise.
God’s Big Picture is a wonderful book for all Christians for helping in understanding the Bible. I recommend it to all Christians.
