Description
Recipient of a 1988 ECPA Gold Medallion Award! An Eternity 1987 Book of the Year!"I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross . . . In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?" With compelling honesty John Stott confronts this generation with the centrality of the cross in God's redemption of the world -- a world now haunted by the memories of Auschwitz, the pain of oppression and the specter of nuclear war.Can we see triumph in tragedy, victory in shame? Why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today? Now from one of the foremost preachers and Christian leaders of our day comes theology at its readable best, a contemporary restatement of the meaning of the cross. At the cross Stott finds the majesty and love of God disclosed, the sin and bondage of the world exposed.More than a study of the atonement, this book brings Scripture into living dialog with Christian theology and the twentieth century. What emerges is a pattern for Christian life and worship, hope and mission.Destined to be a classic study of the center of our faith, Stott's work is the product of a uniquely gifted pastor, scholar and Christian statesman. His penetrating insight, charitable scholarship and pastoral warmth are guaranteed to feed both heart and mind. - from Amzon

REVIEW OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST BY JOHN STOTT.
This is a review of the cross of Christ by one of iserve Africa apprentices Everlyne Muoki. She is placed at ACK MT Kenya Hospital in Kerugoya where she helps in procurement, system administration and facilitation of morning devotion.
Many are times we have used the sign of the cross and the cross, but we barely take into consideration it’s importance in our Christian life. John Stott writes to help us have a clear understanding of the cross and the role that it plays in a Christian life. He gives reason as to why we need the cross and not anything else.
The book has been written in a very orderly way that is easy to understand and follow the flow of the topics. It is divided into four parts that are well elaborated. They include; Approaching the cross, the heart of the cross, the achievement of the cross and the living under the cross.
The author’s intention in the first part is to show that according the new testament, the view of Jesus and the early church presented shows that the cross of Christ is the central feature of Christianity despite the opposition which it arouses. This is a good reason for our continuing to share this perspective today. The crucifixion of Jesus was as a result of giving himself up to do his father’s will. And the book moves on to consider why God intended his son to die in this way and many more as on centrality of the cross.
The author explains the achievements of the cross as salvation of sinners from the wrath of God, captivity to sin, our guilty, our enmity against God and our alienation from God. All this was achieved by God’s love through the shedding of the blood of his son Jesus.
John Stott also brings out the idea of living under cross in a clear way. Jesus’ self-sacrifice on the cross was not just to save isolated individuals and so perpetuate their loneliness, but to create a new community whose members will belong to him, love one another and eagerly serve the world. He concludes by saying that to live under the cross means that every aspect of the Christian community life is shaped by it.
The book has greatly helped me to have the big picture of the work of Christ on the cross. It provides more information than what I have just reviewed on understanding the cross. For more information about the cross just read the book.
The cross of Christ is a must-read book for Christians, I recommend it to every Christian for it appreciates the importance of the cross in their life’s.
